new lands, released in 1997, was album proper no 3, described by pearce as “phase two” of the fsa project. it found pearce operating alone and finally realising the guitar sound that had been in his head all along. “something like ar kane’s god-like up home!,” he revealed in an interview at the time. it was a stark and often challenging listen (pearce stated in one interview that it was originally going to be called fuck you!), yet utterly beguiling.

if you’re setting out on an epic voyage to the electronic disco universe, it pays to recruit an experienced pilot. when it comes to intergalactic musical fusion, few are quite as experienced as cosmic disco pioneer and noted dancefloor explorer daniele baldelli. produced alongside friend and regular studio partner dario piana, zero gravity cannily updates baldelli’s early ‘80s cosmic disco blueprint for the 21st century. we think that the ep contains some of his strongest music to date, with each of the three cuts offering subtle nods to the italian maestro’s original cosmic club ethos. a-side “infinity machine” expertly combines many of baldelli’s greatest musical inspirations into one mind-bending late night workout. underpinned by a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, the track rises and falls through waves of funk-rock guitars, crunchy clavinet lines and intertwined synthesizer solos. throw in jammed-out electric pianos, and you have a near perfect fusion of cosmic disco and blazed funk-rock. the producer’s long-held love of african rhythms surfaces on “if you drive”, where bold acid bass, ricocheting percussion hits and weightless chords combine beautifully with starry melody lines and vintage analogue synthesizer motifs. it’s afro-cosmic for the nu-disco generation. a fine ep is completed by “air lock”, in which baldelli and piana pepper a rubbery, electrofunk-influenced groove with cascading synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and a swathe of fuzzy, eyes-closed guitar solos. it’s bold and assertive, but also as otherworldly and stratospheric as you’d expect from a pioneer at the peak of his powers.

theres a certain ancient mystery to the melodies and feeling of purple hills. gentle, secret, ethereal moods that float invisibly in the spaces its played in. echoes of a familiar dream reverberate behind closed eyes that always remain slightly out of your grasp. chriss vogt’s trip takes you away to that place. a place though that only he knew existed.. until now. yokoo continues to create his own unique vibe. he expressed his love for the track when all day i dream visited morocco. with its groovier approach, it slowly creeps into the consciousness. a crisp drum groove and just a hint at the original’s dominant melodies create a understated new version slightly left of centre. chriss teams up with patrick jeremic for pour eternel. its always summer somewhere and it s dreamy essence charms the listener here. classy house music to take us through winter in the northern hemisphere.

catz n dogz continue to roll out their pets sub label step recordings and follow up a slew of soulheavy dance records from baltra, reno wurzbacher and the analog roland orchestra with a solo ep from fellow polish producer universo. with previous appearances on transatlantyk, the auspicious newcomer slots neatly into the step catalogue in presenting his ‘underworld’ ep: a package of softly glowing lo-fi that fans of baltras recent sophia ep on step will relish. underworld then unfolds at a steady, hypnotic pace as moody, interlocking chords and paired up with a gentle spoken vocal that work together to create a poignant, eyes-down mood. icy strings and a trippy spoken are introduced before kora buta follows up with some warm, swooning sample work. sleeper is next up as distant, meandering thumb pianos and rainy textures colour the tracks fuzzy drums while a glassy, legowelt-esque pad glides overhead.frequenza kicks things off a soft, sizzling pad sent ducking under a rock-hard kick drum.

dj bone is differ-ent. but then again, he always has been. a pioneer dj and producer hailing from detroit, whose technical skills are perhaps only equalled by the upper echelons of the city s most advanced techno trailblazers, he s nonetheless forged a path only of his own. eschewing commercial expectations, scene pressures and anything other than his own exquisite taste, bone has earned a vital, dedicated audience while remaining comfortably and individually underground.

nous horizon is yukseks great studio album comeback, 5 years after his last album. yukseks characteristic sound, midway between post-disco, house and pop, shines through on its various tracks. even more than on his last album, living on the edge of time, yuksek shows his talent as a singer. nous horizon is an album of mostly duets, invitations to sing together (break my heart, sunrise, sweet addiction, stay) featuring greek singer monika, french pop bands her, juveniles and roman rappak (from band breton) his new melodies are sunnier than before his beats and production more subtle.

zweieinhalb jahre nach rhondas debütalbum -raw love- erscheint am 27.01.2017 der nachfolger -wire- auf pias germany. das quintett hat seine mischung aus groovigen beats, lässigem soul mit sixties-vibe und perlenden melodien verfeinert, die punk-wurzeln aber keinesfalls vergessen. so klingt -wire- dann auch teils cineastisch und deutlich düsterer als der vorgänger, was nicht zuletzt an der beteiligung des deutschen filmorchesters babelsberg bei einigen songs liegt! die zusammenarbeit begann im november letzten jahres, als rhonda ein angebot bekam, mit dem filmorchester ein konzert in potsdam zu spielen, welches prompt ausverkauft war! schon dort probierte man einige der neuen songs aus, und es wurde allen klar, diese stücke sollten genau in dieser besetzung für das neue album eingespielt werden.

after a very successful label launch last year with in aeternam vale - “self destruct” ep, linda records returns with another straight talking, analog fuelled 10”. this time welcoming aboard berlin based russian artist alexey volkov. his three track ep “cold blooded genius” comes finely presented on transparent red ten inch vinyl (limited pressing). whilst staying true to its current white label feel, this time linda s trademark eyes, also a fitting red. on the a side at 45rpm the title track “cold blooded genius” and on the b side two tracks will spin at 33rpm, “unfriendly nation” & “curtains of flesh”. we hate to categorise and attempt to summarise what these pieces of music craft sound like into words, we’ll leave you to indulge for a short time to the machine noise of the highly regarded talent that is alexey volkov.
